Guidelines for Photographing, Videoing, Streaming, and Audio Recording

There are many events during treatment that you and your child may wish to photograph, video, stream, or audio record. In the information below, these activities are referred to as “record” or “recording.”

St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital has guidelines for recording. Please follow these guidelines to protect the health, safety, and privacy of you, your child, staff, and all St. Jude patients.

Taking photos or recordings without permission

Do not take photos or recordings of anyone without their permission. This is a key part of protecting everyone’s privacy and safety.

Recording medical care

Do not record any medical care a staff member gives to a patient. Doing so may interfere with the safety and health of you, your child, or staff.

St. Jude staff members and volunteers are generally not allowed to use any device to record medical care being given to a patient. They are not allowed to do so even if you ask them to.

Staff have the right to refuse to be in any recording. They are not allowed to take part in recorded interviews about a patient’s care or treatment. You and your child must always ask before making any recording.

St. Jude staff members may ask you or your family members to delete your recordings if they believe the recordings would affect patient care or someone’s privacy. Please agree to these requests.

Recording important events

Important events occur during treatment that you may want to celebrate and share. The following events may be recorded:

  • First and last day of chemotherapy (after chemo has been given)
  • Birthdays
  • Special patient events (such as Halloween or graduation days)

If you would like other memory-making ideas, talk to a child life specialist or call Child Life at 901-595-3020.

The Caregiver Project

Child Life and Music Therapy  offer The Caregiver Project to help you capture and share your caregiver experiences. These recordings are yours to keep and will only be shared with your consent.

Speak with your child life specialist or music therapist about the Caregiver Project and find dates and times for sessions on the Our St. Jude patient app.

Communication needs

We want to make sure that patients and caregivers have an equal chance to take part in St. Jude services, activities, and programs. This includes those with challenges in:

  • Sensory skills – sight, smell, taste, touch
  • Manual skills – using one’s hands
  • Speech and language skills

If you or your child has a medical or communication need that requires recorded information, St. Jude can help you record that information or get it in a form that is easy to use. To get assistance, ask a member of your care team.

Taking photos of yourself

You and your child may take photos and make recordings of yourselves while at St. Jude. But you must always respect the privacy of other patients, their family members, St. Jude staff members, and volunteers. Photos or videos of yourself may not include:

  • Any medical care being given

  • Any other patients, former patients, their family members, guests, visitors, or St. Jude staff without their permission

  • Staff, unless they agree
