CHRONCAN: Creative Writing for Patients with Cancer

About this study

Young people with cancer have difficult experiences, and writing exercises might help improve their well-being. But not many studies have looked at how creative writing could help these patients. In this study, we want to see if teens and young adults with cancer are interested in completing writing exercises and if they think these exercises are useful.

Patients will have a chance to write about their cancer experiences with help from a skilled writer. The patient will meet briefly with the writer at the beginning of the study. If they want more help, they can meet with the writer 1–3 more times.

After they finish writing, patients will have an informal interview with the study team to talk about whether the activity was helpful.

Patients will be able to share their stories publicly if they wish through collaboration with the Strategic Communication Education and Outreach team. Patients who choose to share their story will be invited to reflect on the experience of sharing their stories in an informal interview afterward.
