Division of Orthopedic Surgery

The division of orthopedic surgery directs its efforts in the areas of clinical care, research, and education with its primary activities involving limb sparing procedures for bone and soft tissue tumors. The orthopedic program is recognized both nationally and internationally. In addition, the division participates in the treatment of orthopedic related conditions that arise as a consequence of the delayed effects of chemotherapy and radiation therapy. More than 90% of children with bone tumors are limb sparing candidates at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital with a greater than 80% excellent functional result in reconstruction of the lower extremities. An area of special interest within the division is the development of an expandable prosthesis for the management of skeletal reconstruction in immature patients following tumor resection.
