Charitable gift annuity – a gift that gives back

A charitable gift annuity (CGA) is a way to support the causes that mean the most to you and receive supplemental income in your retirement. CGA rates increased in 2024 and are higher than they have been in more than a decade.

What is a charitable gift annuity?

A CGA provides a way for you, as a donor, to make an irrevocable gift to support causes, charities and nonprofits like St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. At the same time, CGAs provide a source of fixed income over the course of your life — or for another recipient of your choosing.

How do charitable gift annuities work?

When you sign an annuity agreement with a charity like St. Jude, you make a lump sum donation and take a partial tax deduction.

Once the lump sum is invested, you or a person of your choosing receive payments on a fixed schedule for life, per terms of the agreement.

After the recipient's lifetime, the charity receives the balance of the invested funds.

You can make a CGA part of your legacy plans. You should always consult a tax professional regarding your specific situation and planned giving options.

Your charitable gift annuities help the kids of St. Jude

It is something that I can be proud of because the money is going to support such a phenomenal institution that saves children’s lives. It is a win-win situation for me, and it will also benefit my daughter in the future.

Is a charitable gift annuity right for me?

When you choose to set up a CGA with St. Jude, there are several benefits — both to you and to the children at St. Jude. Planned giving through a CGA might be right for you if you:

  • Want to receive fixed payments for life that will not fluctuate
  • Have assets that would be advantageous to give away during your lifetime, such as cash or funds earning low interest rates, or appreciated securities
  • Want to reduce your current income taxes with a charitable deduction

ALSAC/St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital does not provide tax, legal or accounting advice.  This material is prepared and made available to you for informational purposes only and is not intended to provide or be relied upon for tax, legal or accounting advice.  You should always consult a tax professional to determine your particular tax benefits that may result from any particular type of gift to charity.

Use your qualified charitable distribution to fund a charitable gift annuity

Did you know that you can use your qualified charitable distribution (QCD) to fund a CGA?

As of 2025, IRA holders age 70½ and above can establish one or more CGAs up to $54,000 in total from their QCD. This total amount counts toward the maximum annual QCD limit of $108,000. This opportunity to fund one or more CGAs through your QCD is only available in one calendar year.

While St. Jude representatives are happy to discuss planned giving options, you should consult a tax advisor or other professional for additional information regarding your specific situation.

No bill icon

Families never receive a bill from St. Jude for treatment, travel, housing or food — so they can focus on helping their child live.

Twenty to eighty icon

When St. Jude opened in 1962, childhood cancer was considered largely incurable. Since then, St. Jude has helped push the overall survival rate from 20% to more than 80%, and we won't stop until no child dies from cancer.

Every child deserves a chance to live their best life and celebrate every moment. When you support St. Jude, you can help make cures possible for kids with cancer. Together, we can save more lives.
