What is a QCD?

A qualified charitable distribution (QCD) allows supporters 70½ years old or older to transfer up to $105,000 annually to eligible charities tax-free. By donating gifts from your IRA Qualified Charitable Distribution, you can satisfy your required minimum distribution without increasing your taxable income – putting yourself in better position to avoid phaseouts or higher tax rates.

Starting at age 73, IRA owners must take a required minimum distribution (RMD), which is an annual minimum amount that an account holder must withdraw. While this RMD may increase the account holder's taxable income, IRA owners can satisfy their RMD through a QCD (also referred to as an IRA distribution) directly to St. Jude or another eligible charity. A gift through your IRA QCD may reduce your federal taxable income and potentially provide other benefits.

Qualified Charitable Distribution rules

QCD Age: 70½ or above
If you are 70½ years old or above, you can give through a QCD to an eligible charity.

QCD Distribution: up to $105,000 annually
Through your QCD, you can donate up to $105,000 each year to charitable organizations such as St. Jude. You can make IRA-qualified charitable distributions from traditional IRAs, inactive Simplified Employee Pension (SEP) plans, and inactive Savings Incentive Match Plan for Employees (SIMPLE) IRA.

IRA Charitable Rollover:
This distribution, known as an IRA Charitable Rollover, is authorized by Section 408(d)(8) of the Internal Revenue Code. As a qualified charitable IRA rollover, the gift must be transferred from a traditional IRA directly to a qualified public charity like St. Jude and must be completed during the applicable tax year.

Using QCDs to fund Charitable Gift Annuities

You can use your QCD to fund a Charitable Gift Annuity (CGA), which allows you to receive income for life while helping a charity like St. Jude.

As of 2023, IRA holders age 70½ and above can establish one or more CGAs up to $53,000 in total from their QCD. This total amount counts toward the maximum annual QCD limit of $105,000. This opportunity to fund one or more CGAs through your QCD is only available in one calendar year.

While St. Jude representatives are happy to discuss planned giving options, you should consult a tax advisor or other professional for additional information regarding your specific situation.

Using QCDs to fund Charitable Remainder Trusts

You can also direct a QCD to a charitable remainder trust, which gives you or your designated beneficiary the chance to receive payments from a trust while supporting a charitable organization such as St. Jude.

Similarly, IRA holders age 70½ and above can set up a CRT up to $53,000 in total from their QCD. This total amount is part of your annual $105,000 QCD limit and is only available in one calendar year. Please consult a tax advisor or other professional for additional information regarding your specific situation.

Families never receive a bill from St. Jude for treatment, travel, housing or food — so they can focus on helping their child live.

When St. Jude opened in 1962, childhood cancer was considered largely incurable. Since then, St. Jude has helped push the overall survival rate from 20% to more than 80%, and we won't stop until no child dies from cancer.
