Dr. Diego Figueredo earned his medical degree in 2001 from the National University of Asuncion, Paraguay. He completed pediatric residency at the Instituto de Previsión Social in 2006. His work in pediatrics during residency aroused a marked interest in Pediatric Oncology, however training in this medical specialty was not offered in Paraguay, so he completed his fellowship at the Instituto Materno Infantil de Pernambuco in Recife, Brazil.
In 2008, upon returning to Paraguay, he joined the Department of Pediatric Hemato-Oncology of the Faculty of Medical Sciences of the National University of Asunción. At the University he provides assistance and conducts research and teaching activities in the postgraduate course in Pediatric Hemato-Oncology. The course was created in 2009 and marked Paraguay’s first pediatric hematology oncology fellowship.
Figueredo works to address the social aspects of pediatric cancer patient experiences, as well as improve access to specialized care, and address abandonment through projects and research. He has participated in national and international collaboration and research projects, including the Madrid Asunción twinning program with the Niño Jesus Hospital in Spain and projects obtained through the My Child Matters grant of the Sanofi Espoir Foundation. Figueredo also holds a Master’s degree in molecular oncology from the Universidad Rey Juan Carlos in Madrid, Spain.
Figueredo decided to apply for the Master’s in Global Child Health program at St. Jude because it is a unique learning opportunity to establish relationships with specialists from around the world and collaborate to improve the quality of patient care.
