Victoria Akingbehin

Victoria Akingbehin is a proud Nigerian from Baltimore County, Maryland. Witnessing the pervasive health issues in Nigeria, such as infectious diseases, inadequate healthcare infrastructure, and lack of scientific discovery channeled her passion towards scientific research. These struggles have not only strengthened her resilience but also deepened her commitment to advancing scientific discoveries and improving healthcare outcomes across the United States and beyond. Her unique perspective as an immigrant drives her to make meaningful contributions to the field, inspired by the desire to create a more equitable world where access to quality healthcare and opportunities in science are available to all, regardless of background.

Akingbehin graduated from Towson University in May 2024 with a bachelor’s degree in biology. While at Towson, Akingbehin found her passion for research through her work with Dictyostelium discoideum and Planaria flatworms. Alongside the mentorship of Dr. Michelle Snyder, she explored the effects of bacteria on these model organisms. Although not from a research background, Akingbehin took the lead in designing the team’s experiment with the new model system and problem solving. Her determination and growing confidence were evident as she successfully navigated this complex task. During her time at Towson, Akingbehin presented her findings at 15 regional and national conferences and received several awards, such as the First Place Outstanding Undergraduate Student Award from the American Society of Microbiologists (Maryland branch). Akingbehin’s academic excellence is also reflected in the institutional awards she received, including the Towson University Summer Research Grant and the Research Impact Award which are highly competitive awards presented to highly motivated scientists to lead novel scientific discoveries at Towson. Akingbehin’s commitment to excellence in science and leadership was further demonstrated by her roles as Vice President of the Student Government Association at Baltimore City Community College and as a Vaccine Access & Acceptance, Lives in Unity, Education & Engagement (VALUE) ambassador with the Baltimore City Health Department.

Motivated by her interest in understanding complex biological systems and her desire to contribute to scientific advancements, Akingbehin has decided to pursue a PhD in Biomedical Sciences, focusing on the molecular mechanisms of disease. She carries with her the mantra, "Wherever the soles of my feet go, I will succeed," reflecting her journey from Nigeria to Towson University, and now to her doctoral studies.
