Dec. 10, 2014, is a date that will forever be etched in my heart. While many come to the United States in pursuit of the American Dream, our journey was driven by an entirely different purpose: to save our daughter’s life.

Just 10 days earlier, when our daughter, María Fernanda, was 14 months old, we received the devastating news that no parent wishes to hear: Our daughter had been diagnosed in Cuba with a rare form of cancer in her left eye, known as retinoblastoma. At that moment, it felt as though my heart had stopped beating.

The diagnosis and the limited options available in our country were overwhelming. Only a miracle could have changed our situation, and that miracle manifested itself when we were referred to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital®.

Although the painful memories linger, I remain profoundly grateful for the blessings we have received. Reconciling the pain with deep gratitude is a challenge, yet it is certainly possible.

Since August 2015, we have been taking our daughter to St. Jude for her routine check-ups, and we are confident that her health will continue to be well. We hold this institution in high regard and are immensely thankful for the ongoing support and dedication of the medical professionals and the entire staff.

Thanks to generous donations, families like ours never receive a bill from St. Jude for treatment, travel, housing or food, allowing us to focus exclusively on supporting our children. Upon entering St. Jude, one is enveloped in an extraordinary sense of compassion, purpose, love and commitment.

Maria Fernanda, my princess, has been the source of my inspiration and strength. She is an admirable child who is known for the inner strength she has consistently demonstrated despite her experiences. Her resilience and joy are evident in her achievements, including her selection for the honor society, theater club and gifted program at her school.

As I envision Maria Fernanda’s future, my most precious treasure, I see a horizon filled with optimism and gratitude. I’m thankful for every milestone she reaches, knowing that each one is a testament to her strength and the incredible care she received at St. Jude. I imagine celebrating each moment and stage of her life with enthusiasm and determination, deeply appreciative of the research hospital that made it all possible.
