What is National Cancer Research Month?

National Cancer Research Month is dedicated to raising awareness for the vital research that goes into the treatment and care of individuals with cancer. Here at St. Jude, research is a key part of the work we do each day.

Childhood cancer remains the leading cause of death by disease for children under the age of 14.  When St. Jude opened in 1962, childhood cancer was largely considered incurable. Since then, St. Jude has helped push the overall survival rate from 20% to more than 80%, and we won't stop until no child dies from cancer.

The importance of cancer research can’t be understated and is an essential component of the lifesaving work we do each and every day.

Yazleemar’s story

Yazleemar was diagnosed with retinoblastoma, a rare cancer of the retina, and was referred to St. Jude for treatment. Doctors were able to save her eye, and she now returns to St. Jude for regular checkups.

The St. Jude difference

Powered by some of the brightest minds in science and medicine, equipped with world-class resources and driven by the shared mission of advancing cures, St. Jude publishes research and clinical trials to turn laboratory discoveries into lifesaving treatments that benefit patients.

St. Jude was the first children’s hospital to make a major investment in pediatric cancer genome sequencing. The St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital–Washington University Pediatric Cancer Genome Project has resulted in groundbreaking discoveries in several childhood cancers. Before this project, not even one pediatric cancer genome had been sequenced.

Unlike other hospitals, the majority of funding for St. Jude comes from generous donors. In the years ahead, an estimated 89% of the funds necessary to sustain and grow St. Jude must be raised by ALSAC from generous donors.
