Meet Andres

More than a decade ago, Andres was recovering from a bone marrow transplant at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital®. He was referred to St. Jude in 2014 from Costa Rica after being diagnosed with leukemia. He was 10 years old.

Fast forward to today and Andres is living a life full of joy and normalcy in Costa Rica. He’s in college studying industrial engineering, working out at the gym regularly, enjoying beach days with friends and cherishing moments with his girlfriend. Watching him embrace everyday experiences brings immense happiness to his father, Mario.

“St. Jude saved my kid’s life. They changed our family’s life for the better,” Mario said. “We were lucky enough to be able to spend nine months as a family at St. Jude focusing solely on Andres’ treatment. It was a perfect opportunity to understand the real value of life and faith and make us better.”

Our global impact

An estimated 400,000 children worldwide get cancer each year. In many low- to middle-income countries, 4 out of 5 will not survive largely due to the lack of access to quality care. At St. Jude, we believe that children all over the world deserve the same chance at survival and are working with doctors and institutions worldwide to make that dream a reality. Every child, everywhere.
