Why should I donate cryptocurrency?
Our society has entered a new era of financial technology and digital currency. Cryptocurrency donations can make a meaningful change for the children and families of St. Jude. Unlike other hospitals, the majority of our funding comes from individual donors.
We want to give prospective donors as many ways as possible to support our mission. With the increase of interest in the crypto ecosystem, we see crypto in philanthropy as a new and exciting way for donors to engage with our mission.
Give Bitcoin and other crypto as a tax-deductible donation
Giving Bitcoin and other cryptocurrency can offer a tax efficient way to support St. Jude. The IRS classifies a crypto donation as property. Your contribution is tax-deductible to the fullest extent permitted by law. A taxpayer who donates cryptocurrency directly to charity may be able to claim the full value of the cryptocurrency as a charitable deduction and avoid capital gains taxes. In some situations, you may be able to deduct the full value of the cryptocurrency as a charitable deduction and lower your tax liability.
See our FAQs to learn more about how donating Bitcoin and cryptocurrency can affect your taxes, or consult with a tax professional.*
Through our crypto fundraising collaboration with The Giving Block and Gemini Trust Exchange, we can accept multiple cryptocurrencies, including Ethereum (ETH), Bitcoin Cash (BHC), Bitcoin (BTC) and more. By giving, you help make a difference in the lives of thousands of children worldwide who are in need of lifesaving treatment and care.

When donating crypto, you receive a tax deduction for the fair market value of the crypto at the time of donation. By donating crypto directly, you may be able to avoid the capital gains tax you would have incurred if you had sold the crypto and then made a cash donation. This ultimately means you may be able to donate more, as well as deduct more from your taxes. The capital gains tax will vary based on a number of factors. To learn more, consult a tax professional.
