Diversity, equity and inclusion

It's the foundation on which St. Jude and ALSAC were built, and it remains at the core of everything we do.

Since Day 1, our diverse workforce has been the cornerstone of our success

Our mission is to make a difference in the lives of children worldwide with cancer and other life-threatening diseases. From the very beginning, our founder, Danny Thomas, believed that "no child should die in the dawn of life."

His determination to dismantle bias and promote fair policies and practices is embedded in the fabric of our institution, and continues to guide us today.

We promote diversity and inclusion by valuing and celebrating the uniqueness of everyone

We're committed to making all employees feel welcome, respected and valued. As we collectively work to solve complex, worldwide problems, we're building a workplace environment representative of our national and global society. To us, diversity, equity and inclusion means appreciating our common humanity and celebrating our differences.

Both ALSAC and St. Jude have Offices of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, along with resource groups for employees. Learn more about the resources and amenties specific to St. Jude and to ALSAC.

St. Jude was envisioned as a beacon of equality and inclusion

When we were founded, segregation was common in the South. But St. Jude and ALSAC were created as institutions committed not only to medical and scientific progress but to racial justice as well.

Located in Memphis, Tenn., St. Jude was the first fully integrated children's hospital in the South. From Day 1, no child was denied treatment at St. Jude because of race, ethnicity, beliefs or a family’s ability to pay.

St. Jude also played an important role in the integration of Memphis hotels. And at St. Jude, researchers, doctors and nurses have always looked like their patients — from all walks of life.

People who had a different view of humanity were the ones who came originally and headed the hospital. They brought that spirit of inclusion and equality with them.

We believe in the importance of diversity in the workplace. The St. Jude mission inspires us to ensure an inclusive, culturally responsive and equitable environment where people feel a sense of belonging, empowerment and respect. This drives how we approach working with each other, with our supporters and with our patients and their families.
