William E. Evans, Pharm.D., is the recipient of the Remington Honor Medal, the pharmacy profession’s highest recognition

St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital director and CEO, William E. Evans, Pharm.D., has been honored with the 2012 Remington Honor Medal by the American Pharmacists Association (APhA). The award was given to Evans for his research with anticancer agents and pharmacogenomics, as well as his leadership contributions to St. Jude.

The Remington Honor Medal was established in 1918 to recognize distinguished service on behalf of American pharmacy during the preceding years, culminating in the past year or during a long period of outstanding activity or fruitful achievement. It was named in honor of Joseph P. Remington, an eminent community pharmacist, manufacturer and educator.

“Dr. Evans is highly regarded in multiple national and international professional groups, including pharmacy,” said William Greene, Pharm.D., chief pharmaceutical officer at St. Jude. “The Remington Honor Medal is the pharmacy profession’s most prestigious award, and the recognition of Dr. Evans with this award is a testimony to his effectiveness and impact in the profession of pharmacy as well as his scientific endeavors. The excellence recognized in this award is a reflection of the performance that Dr. Evans compels from all of us at St Jude, including Pharmacy, and is a wonderful honor for us all.”

Evans’ research is focused on the pharmacogenomics of anticancer agents in children, funded by three consecutive National Institutes of Health MERIT Awards from the National Cancer Institute (NCI). He was elected to the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences in 2002 and holds an Endowed Chair at the University of Tennessee Colleges of Pharmacy and Medicine.

“The work of Dr. Evans is known internationally,” said Marie Chisholm-Burns, Pharm.D., dean of the College of Pharmacy at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center. “He is an icon, not only in pharmacy but in multiple disciplines. I am very proud of him and look forward to working with him in the future. The University of Tennessee College of Pharmacy is very excited about this new honor for Dr. Evans.”

Evans is a member of the Board of Trustees of Rhodes College and has authored more than 300 articles. He has received several awards for his research including most recently the 2009 Pediatric Cancer Award from the American Society of Clinical Oncology and the 2009 American Association for Cancer Research Team Science Award.

Since Evans became CEO in 2004, St. Jude has been ranked for six consecutive years by The Scientist magazine as one of the top 10 “Best Places to Work in Academia.” St. Jude was also ranked the No. 1 pediatric cancer care hospital in the country by Parents magazine in 2009; the No. 1 children’s cancer hospital according to the 2010-2011 Best Children’s Hospital rankings published by U.S. News & World Report; and in both 2011 and 2012, named one of the country’s “100 Best Companies to Work For” by FORTUNE magazine. St. Jude is also the only NCI-designated comprehensive cancer center devoted solely to children.

The American Pharmacists Association was founded in 1852 as the American Pharmaceutical Association and represents more than 62,000 practicing pharmacists, pharmaceutical scientists, student pharmacists, pharmacy technicians and others interested in advancing the profession.

Evans accepted the Remington Honor Medal at the recent APhA Annual Meeting and Exposition in New Orleans.
