Melissa loves the sound of the word “mom.”

Her youngest daughter, who just turned 1, already says it clearly.

Every time she hears it, she feels an indescribable emotion and “a huge responsibility.”

“From the moment they are born, you see their innocence and you know they depend on you to grow,” Melissa said. “That word confirms to me that everything has been worth it because one does everything for them.”

Melissa is also the mother of a 14-year-old teenager and Luis, 7. She faced great challenges with Luis during his young life.

“As a mother, you know when something is wrong with your child,” Melissa said, remembering how Luis changed from being a hyperactive child to a listless one after a fall in a park.

Luis was diagnosed with leukemia, a type of blood cancer, at the age of 3. He was referred to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

“At St. Jude, they did not see him as a sick child. They made the process fun. He is a champion, a warrior. During the treatment, he played and gave me courage,” Melissa said.

Luis finished his treatment in 2022 and today he is healthy.

Melissa only has one wish for Mother’s Day: “to be happy next to my three children, knowing that they are healthy”. And a piece of advice for the other mothers? “Enjoy your children, in every stage. Let them be children and be thankful when they reach each milestone.”
