As the date approached for Capri’s surgery at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital® to remove a cancerous tumor on her adrenal gland, her father, Chandler, had an idea.

“I’ve got this quirky thing that if I want to have a really, really good day, I put on a new pair of socks,” he said.

So, he and his wife, Liz, posted to social media, asking people to support Capri by praying, of course, but also by wearing a new pair of socks on her surgery day.

The response was overwhelming.

Hey Chandler, what's your best "dad joke"?

One thousand miles away from St. Jude, in their small Colorado hometown, people were buying up socks.

“Everybody said they went to Wal-Mart and every person is walking around with a package of socks to be ready for her surgery,” said Liz. “It was so sweet.”

On the day of Capri’s surgery, more than 600 people from around the world posted photos on social media of themselves wearing a new pair of socks.

Right before Capri’s surgery, Liz and Chandler handed out brand-new socks to her entire St. Jude surgical team.

Afterward, the team filed out to where Liz and Chandler anxiously waited for news about their daughter. They lifted their pants legs to show off their new socks — their way of announcing Capri’s surgery had been successful.

“It was just so helpful to me personally to see them wearing the socks because it was, ‘Hey, that’s my thing and you made it your thing to make sure I knew you wanted Capri to be OK,’” said Chandler.

“It just meant the world to us because we knew everyone at St. Jude was on our side.”
