St. Jude Children's Research Hospital is expanding how we serve children and families around the world with the launch of St. Jude Global.
We believe that we are at a turning point in pediatric cancer care. In the United States, the survival rate for pediatric cancer exceeds 80 percent. We are proud of the role St. Jude has played in achieving this remarkable goal.
However, the outlook for children with cancer in many other nations is not as promising. More than 80 percent of children with cancer live in low- and middle-income countries. Most of these children will die from their disease. It’s time to improve on this devastating statistic and improve access to quality care for children everywhere.
St. Jude Global is an ambitious initiative to expand our global reach and improve survival rates of children with cancer and other life-threatening diseases around the world. An evolution of our International Outreach Program that was established in 1993, St. Jude Global has set a bold goal: to increase the number of children whose care St. Jude influences around the world from 3 percent to 30 percent in the next decade. Ultimately, our goal is for all children with cancer to have access to quality care – no matter where they live.
St. Jude Global leverages the resources and expertise of St. Jude and partners around the world. With more than $100 million in support from our institution, it is developing a network of interactive programs and institutions and forming a global alliance that will improve access to care, enhance the quality of care children receive, and provide better options for cures.
It is focused on three core areas:
- Education: Training the clinical workforce needed to achieve our mission;
- Capacity building: Strengthening health systems and patient-centered initiatives across the continuum of care through the development of regional networks and a global alliance; and
- Research: Advancing knowledge of global pediatric oncology and hematology to sustain a continuous improvement in the level and quality of care delivered around the globe.
No other institution is approaching the global health challenge of childhood cancer in quite the same way.
Hospital founder Danny Thomas said that no child should die in the dawn of life. St. Jude Global is a dramatic step forward in ensuring that children everywhere have the possibility of cures for cancer and other life-threatening diseases. St. Jude Global does more than expand our institution’s worldwide presence. It will define our legacy.
