Memorial donations and gifts

Memorial donations are gifts to nonprofits in memory of someone who has passed away. Some families request a memorial donation in lieu of flowers or other tribute gifts.

What's the difference between an 'in honor of" and an 'in memory of' donation?

The difference between “in honor of” and “in memory of” depends on the person or event you are commemorating.

  • Honor donations are given in honor of an individual, special event or occasion. Donating in honor of a friend or family member is a way to celebrate them or their accomplishments.
  • Donations in memory of loved ones are typically made after they pass away. If your loved one had a favorite cause or charity, donating in their memory can be a way to remember them and create an impact with an important cause at the same time.

Memorial donation FAQs

  1. If you do not have a link to donate to a specific memorial fund page, you can donate online, call  (800) 213-6584, or mail a check to:

    Memorial Giving
    501 St. Jude Place
    Memphis, TN 38105

If you mail a check, please include a memorial fund ID or the name of the individual that the gift is in memory of.

  2. If you make a memorial donation outside of a fund, you'll be given the option to notify someone via mail card or e-card. You'll need the address or email address of the recipient, and you'll be able to choose a design and personalize your card.

  3. The easiest and quickest way is to set up a St. Jude memorial fund page. You have the option to personalize this page with a picture and information about or an obituary or other information about the deceased and the page can be shared with friends and family.

You can also set up a St. Jude memorial fund by calling (800) 213-6584. You will need to have the following information on hand:

    • Full name and nickname of the deceased
    • Home city and state of the deceased
    • Name and address of a family member or friend who would like to be notified of donations
  4. Donors often request memorial donation envelopes to keep on hand or to lay out at the funeral or memorial service of a loved one. You can request these by calling (800) 213-6584 or by emailing memorials@stjude.org.

  5. Mail cards take approximately 3-10 days (5 to 7 business days) to arrive.

  6. Yes. Personalized messages on e-cards have a 1,000-character limit. Mail cards have a 350-character limit.

  7. An email with the selected card and message will be sent to the recipient from noreply@stjude.org.  If the recipient has not received the card, please ask them to check their spam and junk folders for an e mail from noreply@stjude.org if you don’t see it in your inbox.

  8. If you choose to donate in memory of someone, you can opt out of notifying anyone. If you prefer, you can notify a recipient that an anonymous donation has been made in their loved one or friend's memory.

  9. You should write a message that is personalized and positive while mentioning the cause for which the donation was made. Learn more about how to write a memorial donation letter with our guide.
