Celebrating World Kindness Day and other kindness days

As recognized holidays focused on kindness, World Kindness Day and Random Acts of Kindness Day are two opportunities to show your generosity and make an impact on others. Supporting causes like St. Jude is a perfect example of how to show kindness and make a difference for children with cancer and other catastrophic diseases around the world.

Why does kindness matter?

Whether we are on the giving or the receiving end, kindness has the power to help us grow as people, to bring us together as humans and — when we work together — the power to overcome what can feel like the most impossible of obstacles.

Kindness makes us stronger.

How St. Jude helps spread kindness in all directions

A single act of kindness throws out roots in all directions, and the roots spring up and make new trees.

Amelia Earhart, (Quote in the lobby of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital)

We can't save the lives of children with cancer and other deadly diseases without the support of generous donors like you.  Treatments developed at St. Jude have helped raise the survival rate for children with cancer in the United States, where 4 out of 5 children survive cancer. In many countries, however, only 1 out of 5 children who develop cancer will survive. We won’t stop until no child dies from cancer, no matter where they live.

St. Jude gives kids with cancer the chance they deserve

Ashtyn is an outgoing, happy girl who loves cheering, dancing, singing, drawing and coloring. In April 2018, Ashtyn was wobbly and dizzy during cheer practice. When she also started having headaches and vomiting, it was cause for concern. Ashtyn’s parents learned from an MRI that Ashtyn had a rare type of brain cancer called medulloblastoma.
At St. Jude she underwent a brain surgery, as well as proton therapy and chemotherapy, plus physical and occupational therapy and other supportive therapies. Ashtyn is finished with treatment, doing well and returns to St. Jude for regular scans. “It’s a terrible situation, to have a child with cancer, but St. Jude makes it less stressful on parents,” Ashtyn’s mom said.

World Kindness Day and Random Acts of Kindness Day FAQs

World Kindness Day and Random Acts of Kindness Day are two special days dedicated to spreading joy and encouraging small acts of kindness. Learn more about each day and how you teach by example.

  1. Originally established in 1998 by the World Kindness Movement, World Kindness Day is a globally observed holiday created to encourage acts of kindness and showcase the true power kindness can have.

  2. World Kindness Day is celebrated every year on Nov. 13.

  3. Random Acts of Kindness Day started as a movement to encourage people everywhere to spread kindness through small, impactful acts such as opening a door for someone, paying for the person behind you in line for coffee and meeting acts of kindness with positivity if you are on the receiving end. Many use this day as an opportunity to give back to their communities or to organizations and causes they’d like to support.

  4. Random Acts of Kindness Day is celebrated annually in the U.S. on Feb. 17. It is celebrated in other countries on different days throughout the year. For example, in New Zealand (where it was originally established), this day is celebrated on Sept. 1.

  5. One of the most impactful ways to teach children about kindness is by example. Consider having your children tag along with you to charity events and volunteer activities. These are two simple ways of teaching them about the power of philanthropy and encouraging them to share their generosity and kindness with the world.
