Forty-six years ago, Tim Driscoll wanted to raise money for a place that treated sick children free of charge. He wrote to two places, one being St. Jude. St. Jude wrote back first and that was the beginning of his long commitment to the children at St. Jude. Tim was lucky enough to meet Danny Thomas on a few different occasions. He was good friends with CEOs, including current CEO Richard Shayac, Jr. along with Board Members. He and Cathy were invited to many national gala events and volunteer recognition banquets over the years.
St. Jude honored Tim with a posthumous Lifetime Achievement Award in 2016 in which his family humbly accepted at St. Jude. He saw the hospital explode from one small building to a campus full of cutting edge, multi-story buildings. At the time we hit the $1 million mark, Tim took great pride in the fact that Litchfield County raised enough money to keep the hospital open for one day.
Tim began this fundraising quest out of the goodness of his heart. He had no prior connection to St. Jude, no real connection to cancer. What he had was a passion for children and a strong desire to help others in need. On August 12, 2015, Tim earned his wings and joined Danny Thomas in heaven. It is our honor to continue his legacy and continue his fight against catastrophic childhood cancer. Surely, he will be smiling down on us and so very proud of his family and friends to still be going strong, 46 years later, in his name and honor.
