Overview of Program
The Nancy Martinez Fellowship, named in honor of Nancy Martinez, a postdoctoral fellow who tragically passed away in 2020, was developed to train first-generation Latinx undergraduate researchers at the chemistry-biology interface.
The Nancy Martinez Fellowship offers talented undergraduate students at the University of Puerto Rico in Rio Piedras (UPR-PR) to complete a summer internship within the Department of Chemical Biology & Therapeutics (CBT) at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Nancy Martinez Fellows will participate in drug discovery research and have access to cutting-edge biotech/pharma technologies to treat rare pediatric diseases.
Selected fellows will engage in a full-time learning experience. You should expect to be available Monday through Friday during standard laboratory hours.
Typical Learning Opportunities and Activities
- Fellows will engage with St. Jude faculty mentors to perform innovative research at the chemistry-biology interface.
- Attend departmental research seminars.
- Participate in professional development workshops.
- Present summer research progress to the department.
Education Required
- Candidates must be enrolled at the University of Puerto Rico in Rio Piedras.
- Candidates must have completed at least 60 credit hours.
- Candidates should have a GPA of> 3.25.
Characteristics of a Successful Candidate
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Good problem-solving and critical-thinking skills.
- Basic laboratory and technical skills.
