John and Lisa Wintermantel began volunteering at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in 2018.
They have been involved in numerous volunteer organizations throughout the community. “John started at St. Jude first and told me I really needed to volunteer there because it was all of our families from the Ronald McDonald House, which I also volunteer at. It just seemed like my next step,” Lisa said.
During a typical shift as a Ready Runner, John collects and distributes wagons and wheelchairs, escorts patients and families, and re-stocks supplies. During a typical Helping Hands shift, he and Lisa enjoy playing with the kids while the parents get lunch or run errands. The couple also provide listening ears for parents and clean the playrooms and toys. Throughout their shifts, John and Lisa often interact with staff as well. John mentions that he has met many amazing people, many of whom are St. Jude staff. “Everyone is always so kind and friendly,” said Lisa. “Witnessing the interaction of staff with the families is nothing short of amazing.”
During John’s time outside of volunteering, he enjoys outdoor sports, leisure activities and family time. Lisa also enjoys family time, as well as gardening and refurbishing furniture.
John and Lisa say they enjoy many aspects about volunteering at St. Jude. “Getting to know some of the patients and families and running into them during the course of the day is one of my favorite parts,” John said. “Also, experiencing how they deal with their circumstances with such courage and grace. It’s amazing that the overlying theme I see is that of hope.”
