Frederick M. Azar, MD, is an orthopaedic surgeon specializing in sports medicine in Memphis, Tennessee. He is Chief-of-Staff at the Campbell Clinic, as well as Professor and Director of the Sports Medicine Fellowship program in the University of Tennessee-Campbell Clinic Department of Orthopaedic Surgery & Biomedical Engineering. He was also Director of that department’s residency program for 10 years. Dr. Azar is the team physician for the NBA Memphis Grizzlies and was selected as the 2012 Team Physician of the Year. He also serves as a team physician for the University of Memphis, Lemoyne Owen College, Christian Brothers High School, the AAA Memphis Redbirds, the USL Memphis 901FC and the NBA G League Memphis Hustle.
Dr. Azar attended the University of Notre Dame for his undergraduate degree. After earning his medical degree from Tulane University of Medicine, Dr. Azar completed a residency in orthopaedic surgery at the University of Tennessee-Campbell Clinic Department of Orthopaedic Surgery & Biomedical Engineering and a fellowship in sports medicine at the American Sports Medicine Institute in Birmingham, Alabama. He was also an American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM) Traveling Fellow and a graduate of the inaugural class of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) Leadership Fellows Program.
For more than 25 years, Dr. Azar has been an active volunteer in the AAOS, where he served as President, Treasurer, and Board Member at-Large. He is currently a Director for the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgeons (ABOS) and also serves as Treasurer. Dr. Azar is also active in other national and international professional societies, including the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM), the Arthroscopy Association of North America (AANA), and the American Orthopaedic Association (AOA). He is the Past-President of the NBA Team Physicians Association.
Dr. Azar has authored and edited numerous peer-reviewed articles, book chapters, and other publications. He is a co-editor of Campbell’s Operative Orthopaedics, 13th Edition and 14th editions, Campbell’s Core Orthopaedic Procedures, and editor of Illustrated Tips and Tricks in Sports Medicine Surgery and Orthopaedic Knowledge Update-Sports Medicine 6. He is the Editor-in-Chief of Orthopaedic Clinics, and serves on the editorial board of the American Journal of Sports Medicine. He has also been honored as a visiting professor at numerous academic programs.
An active participant in a number of community philanthropic organizations, Dr. Azar is the current Chair of the ALSAC Board of Directors.
