Nearly 200 runners set off from Memphis in late July for the 34th Memphis to Peoria Run – a 465-mile relay event that ends in a St. Jude telethon in Peoria, Illinois. Established in 1982, the event has raised more than $40 million for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Gene Pratt and Peoria County Sheriff Mike McCoy co-founded the run, in which McCoy still participates. Runners include St. Jude patient families, St. Jude staff and devoted St. Jude supporters. There are also 39 satellite runs that start in Illinois and Missouri, with a total of 3,000 runners crossing the finish line in Peoria.
