How much of my donation is tax-deductible?

Check the standard deductions according to the IRS for the current year:

  • single-filer
  • head of household
  • married couples filing a joint return

A tax-deductible donation can reduce your taxable income. When filing your tax return, you will have to itemize your deductions in order to claim tax-deductible donations given to charity.

With proper documentation, you can also claim vehicle or cash donations. To deduct a non-cash donation, you will have to fill out Form 8283 and submit with your return along with any other required information.

If you plan to make gifts to one or more 501(c)(3) organizations over time, you can concentrate your charitable deductions into one year by establishing a donor-advised fund. It works like a savings account for a charity you give to on a regular basis. Donations made to a donor-advised fund are generally entitled to an immediate charitable deduction, and it allows you to recommend grants to charities of your choice over time.
