I'm Dressing Casual for St. Jude Kids

Employees give up ties for T-shirts to support St. Jude

Lab coats and scrubs may be the usual attire for people fighting childhood cancer, but at a number of companies across the country this past September, jeans and T-shirts identified those helping St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in its mission of finding cures and saving children.

Employees at companies such as Zurich Omaha, Baxter Healthcare Corporation, Women’s Life Insurance Society and the University of Chattanooga traded in their business dress attire for a casual workday and a chance to help the children of St. Jude during the I’m Dressing Casual for St. Jude Kids campaign. The inaugural program launched in September—which is National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month—and gives companies an opportunity to help St. Jude while building morale and company pride.

In today’s workplace, the line between work and home is becoming increasingly blurred and employees are seeking more purposeful work. Companies that provide substance and meaning will be rewarded with high employee pride, morale and retention, according to the 2007 Cone Cause Evolution Study. The I’m Dressing Casual for St. Jude Kids campaign helps provide that substance and meaning.

Marisa Ryan of Baxter Healthcare Corporation said, “With our busy lives, many of us tend to forget about charitable organizations and their needs. But the casual program was such a simple and easy way for us to remember those in need, while getting to wear our comfy clothes. Even better was the fact that Baxter matched our donations, in some cases, 2 for 1. To be able to help out a truly great organization such as St Jude in such an effortless way was gratifying.”

To participate in the casual day, employees make a donation to St. Jude. Then on the specified day chosen by the company, employees get to work comfortably while knowing they are helping children and families win their battles against cancer.

“I’m Dressing Casual for St. Jude Kids is a fantastic way for companies to support St. Jude,” said Richard C. Shadyac Jr., chief executive officer of ALSAC, the fundraising organization of St. Jude. ”We hope that many companies will use this new avenue to help us in our mission and help their employees feel good about the company for which they work.”
