How does Math-A-Thon work?
- Schools hold an assembly during which students watch a video explaining Math-A-Thon and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Students receive sponsor forms and more information following the assembly.
- Students take home the sponsor forms and return the attached permission slip signed by a parent.
- Students obtain sponsors while completing a Funbook© by solving a variety of math problems including hidden messages, puzzles and pure arithmetic operations.
- The Funbook© is available in paper form and as an interactive CD-ROM (PC version only).
- Both students and schools can earn prizes based upon the amount of money they raise. Click the links in the upper left-hand corner for more information concerning prizes.
- New to the program this year is Math-A-Thon WIRED! This Volunteer Portal, accessible at our Web site, www.mathathon.org, allows both students and teachers to set up web pages and solicit sponsors via e-mail. The Web site has also been updated with new games, new e-cards and more!
What does Math-A-Thon provide?
Math-A-Thon reinforces learning
- Students can complete a math Math-A-Thon Funbook Funbook© suited to achievement level, not official grade level.
- Some schools use Math-A-Thon as a primer for achievement and standardized tests.
- Math-A-Thon also exercises students' comprehension skills, ability to follow directions and motor coordination skills.
Funbooks are a collective publication of: Addison-Wesley Publishing Company, Creative Publications Inc. and Holt, Rinehart and Winston Inc.
Teaches social awareness and volunteerism
- Math-A-Thon is offered to students for individual participation.
- Students obtain sponsors by asking only people they know to make a pledge based on pledges-per-problem.
- Math-A-Thon supplements other learning skills by reinforcing the values of responsibility and self-discipline while developing an awareness of helping other children.
- Through the use of Math-A-Thon WIRED, students can hone technological skills through an on-line medium.
Uses a minimum amount of school time
- Introductory film lasts about 10 minutes.
- Students complete the Funbook© at school or home.
- Parents can check students answers using the answer key in the back of the printed Funbook©, and the CD version checks answers automatically.
- Each coordinator selects a program date most convenient to the school's schedule.
Math-A-Thon fights childhood cancer
- St. Jude is supported primarily by public contributions through such programs as Math-A-Thon.
What Does St. Jude Provide?
Once recruited, the coordinator will receive a guide packet to help organize and plan the event. The guide packet will also contain a VHS tape (approximately 13 minutes) that shows step-by-step how to set up a Math-A-Thon, along with a patient story and information about the hospital. Approximately four to five weeks before the event, the coordinator will receive a kit containing all the materials needed for a successful event.
