Pioneers for equity and hope

St. Jude was founded on the principles of equity and inclusion. When it opened in Memphis, Tenn. in 1962, St. Jude was the first fully integrated children’s hospital in the Southern United States. During a time of widespread segregation, St. Jude hired Black doctors, researchers and nurses, while providing care services to children, regardless of race.

St. Jude was also involved in the integration of Memphis hotels during the Civil Rights Movement, calling for Black patients and their families to be allowed to stay in the same facilities as white patients and families. The St. Jude medical director during that time, Dr. Donald Pinkel, held firm to the institution’s demands until the hotels eventually agreed.

Pathway to the future

The first research grant that St. Jude ever received, in 1958, before the hospital was even built, was for the study of sickle cell disease.

Since then, St. Jude has been part of major advances in sickle cell disease treatment over the last 60 years and continues to explore new cutting-edge curative therapies for the disease, such as gene editing techniques to correct the mutation that causes sickle cell disease. Today, St. Jude has one of the largest sickle cell disease programs in the country.

I broke down a lot of racial barriers on my jobs and in my life. I come from a background of proud civil rights fighters. I support the mission of St. Jude because they are helping all children.

As a Black physician, it is very meaningful seeing St. Jude really shine a spotlight on their care of sickle cell and how transformative that is for minorities and marginalized communities in the world.
